Cherno Alpha

"In the summer of 2013, a small, secretive branch of INTERPOL, known as the IFEB brought me to their attention. The IFEB (International Future Events Bureau) are the people entrusted with the secrets of future history retrieved from the files found within the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah in 1991. Upon contacting me, they immediately permitted me access to some of their most secretive files, specifically, the “pacific. rim” files involving the “Breach Events”, rumored to be the largest series of kaiju attacks in the course of the 21st Century.

I was astonished to discover the truth: they wanted me, ancient and wizened though I have become, to act as an advisor to the imminent kaiju threat that will first come a few months from the time of this writing. The threat is remarkable: a series of kaiju attacks from another dimension, originating from a portal beneath the Pacific Ocean known as “The Breach”. The kaiju, though resistant (but not immune) to conventional weaponry, and capable of being killed by nuclear weapons, will be repulsed by something less drastic than atomic armaments: a series of gigantic, cyberkinetically-controlled mechs known as the “Jaegers”. The Jaegers will almost exclusively be piloted by two emotionally close individuals – generally very close friends or family members – due to the cerebral hemorrhaging caused in a single pilot by the gigantic machine’s “programming feedback”. The war will endure for years, and the Jaeger pilots will enter the realms of legend…

Among the most powerful and reliable Jaegers ever to be created by humanity will be the immense Cherno Alpha, a gigantic Russian model to be launched in 2015 that will be piloted by the husband-wife team of Aleksis and Sasha Kaidonovsky. Slow, but heavily armored, the Jaeger will be the last of the Mark-1 series to remain in action, after spending six years single-handedly defending the Russian coast against any and all kaiju attacks.

The immense robot will be one of four Jaegers, the “Last Four”, put into action in the Shatterdome after the Jaeger project loses its funding. During a Double Event in 2025 that will send two Category 4 kaiju towards Hong Kong, Cherno Alpha will be deployed alongside the Chinese Crimson Typhoon to take them out, with the Australian Striker Eureka acting as backup.

Cherno Alpha will outlast its battle partner, but will eventually fall when one kaiju, the Otachi, vomits a stream of corrosive acid onto its face, dissolving its reactor and parts of the cockpit. This will be followed by an ambush by Otachi's partner, Leatherback, that will leave Cherno Alpha helpless. While Otachi holds Striker Eureka off, Leatherback will force the other mech underwater, and then crush the Jaeger’s cockpit, killing the Kaidonovskys.

Though Cherno Alpha will be destroyed, the fact that it requires the combined forces of two Category 4 kaiju to kill it will stand as testament to its remarkable physical prowess and stolid determination…"
